More Admins

I think in light of the whole argument thing we should leave them a while. We're doing OK for admins for the time being anyway. Chris talk - mod 15:35, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

MT

I figure we should give Magical Trevor a go as an Admin for two weeks. Edits seem to be of a generally good standard, dedicated etc. We need members from lower years anyway.

Chris talk - mod 22:48, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

CC

Caption Competition: we've had no new photos for years and it's just not that well used. If you can find some decent photos you can resurrect it, but I don't think we have a large enough user base. Chris talk - mod 22:37, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

I think we made the site as a bit of an experiment to start with, and we're pretty surprised it's still running! Long may it continue..

Admins

With regards to promoting people to Admin status: there are a couple of candidates but I don't think establishing an arbitrary number of posts is going to be particularly effective. How about if someone wants to be an Admin they should ask one of us, as the two active Bureaucrats, and we can then discuss it and promote them if we both agree? Obviously the more Admins we have, the less of an accolade it is, and we only really need a handful active at any one time. Let me know what you think.

Chris talk - mod 11:08, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Also, I think we're doing OK for Admins at the minute. Let's give it a couple of weeks and evaluate the situation then.

Chris talk - mod 18:06, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi again

Re: Campon something

A week is fine in my opinion. Chris talk - mod 08:13, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

Hello!

Hi there. First off, many thanks for keeping an eye on the wiki. My name's Chris, I'm one of the founder members but sadly not an admin. I left in 2006 so it's been a fair while! Just to say I really appreciate what you've been doing on the site. I haven't had much contact with Dave (who runs the site) recently, but if you send an email to the wiki account I'm sure he can sort out the admin details. I'll try and get in touch too.

Just to add.. if there are any pages that need deleting or people who need banning, drop a message on the Moderation Requests (as you have been doing) and/or on my talk page and I'll sort them out when I get the time. Thanks again!

Chris talk - mod

Helping Out

Sure, I can help around. I know a few things I could add and cleanup.

I'll go along with any plans you have to improve the site.

thanks

Hey

It's real nice that you're so enthusiastic, but you have a hell of a superiority complex. Branding every other person who doesn't agree with you 'Sockpuppetry of Idiot123‎' is just silly and uncalled for. It's a website, not the meaning of life. Chill.

Eve 12:13, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

Undo it, report it, ignore it. When it comes down to it, you don't have the power to ban IP's, or even look at them, so you'll never really know. It's rude to brand people you don't know 'sockpuppets', whatever they may or may not of done, especially when you have no concrete proof.

Say Whut (and yes, that is spelt wrong on purpose, before anyone says)

Ok, so you make a page, tell two users to argue on it, then ban the users.

o.O

Eve 20:09, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Wasn't that kinda the point of the page...

Eve 20:21, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

No... the point of me pointing out those account was to show you the similarities with what was happening back in 2007 and what's happening now. This wiki always has outbreaks of drama

Eve 20:32, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

I think... you'll never know. Could be. But we thought it 'could be' a lot of people last time. There was no way to prove it so we just ignored them until they got bored.

Eve 20:45, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

uh sure...? You'd have to ask the people who run the site though...

Eve 20:52, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Something Smells Fishy...

Hi BRGSMan. I have seen some edits by someone named Servant Camponhoyle, and I'm starting to believe there is at least one link between this editor, and the one known as Camponhoyle. Care to discuss? Thanks, Sellers (WithAnN) 19:11, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

I believe it is connected to a account on wikipedia that vandalised the site. It has no connection to me other than the people who created it knew me. By all means ban them if they vandalise but dont ban me as my i.p. address is not the same, so that will prove it was not me. Campon Hoyle your friendly neighbourhood editer 19:12, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

In fact, I believe the account are actually linked to SellersWithAnN and you BRGSMan, as both me and you know this person and we both know that BRGSMan was the original creator of ServantHoyle on wikipedia. Campon Hoyle your friendly neighbourhood editer 19:14, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Camponhoyle, fair enough I created that account, but I have put that behind of me and that is why I am an Admin today so you can count me out. Sellers with an N could potentially be the culprit, but to be honest, I'm not exactly sure. BRGSMan 19:18, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Obviously, it isn't me Mr Camponhoyle, as I am still editing pages and am not banned. No matter what has happened in the past, this is still happening now, so I think you should be put under watch until this is all sorted. Thanks, Sellers (WithAnN) 19:22, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Why

Why would i risk getting my account banned when i am trying to become an admin and have got over 250 edits that i would have to start again if my account was banned.Campon Hoyle your friendly neighbourhood editer 19:24, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

No you wouldn't. The ban is not neccesserily permanent. BRGSMan 19:25, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Okaaay...

First off, IP address' are all very nice and everything, and they do work for banning quite a few people, but the fact is, I could get free legal software that would tell you that I was editing from Canada, when, in fact I would be ediing from my house (not Canada). So as I said yesterday, you should just keep editing out any abusive edits made by a user, and keep banning the account. It is very easy to pretend to be someone else on the internet, and you're very unlikely to resolve this completley.

Eve 19:30, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

For example, take a look at my IP for this edit. It should be America or something, when clearly, I am not in America.

Eve 19:34, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

There's no government law stopping you, it's just the capibilities of the website. Or your privilages. Either way, meh. Point still stands.

Eve 19:46, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Sorry to stick my nose in but you could argue that the ip address when used in conjunction with a isp could be used to trace an individual thus breaching the Data protection act of 1988 which makes the public distrubution of any infomation relating to the wareabouts of any person living in the united knigdom withought there or the responsible adults in the case of an under 16 year olds permision illegal.Campon Hoyle your friendly neighbourhood editer 19:58, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Admin

Hi BRGSMan, i am interested in becoming an admin to help improve the BRGSWiki site. I have ties with the school and will be able to help update pages. Hopefully you will be able to help me and put a good word in for me with the bureaucrats. Many thanks, BRGSHelper

Hi there, I would definitely interested in making you an admin, but you will need a couple of hundred edits to prove yourself. Also, remember to sign your coments with four tildes ~ otherwise it is considered rude around here. Many thanks BRGSMan 20:07, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Why

I would like to know why I am banned when i have done nothing.Campon Hoyle your friendly neighbourhood editer 20:15, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

Congrats on the status upgrade, and it would be really cool to become an admin/mod whatever. Thanks =)

Eve 18:39, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

Hihi, Sorry I was being terribly rude not sorting that out a week or so ago: I've been a bit busy with the whole degree thing. It'd be great to have you on the bureaucrat team and provide a fresh perspective on the whole wiki, indeed feel free to implement changes to policy and the agenda of the website. It's difficult for many of us who've left already to be up-to-speed on everything and to know what's acceptable or crossing the line. I shall continue to keep the wiki technically supported and funded. All the best, David DavidB

Red Links

There's been a lot of deleting of red links, which yeah, makes the page look better, but seeing a red link could encourage people to actually create the page, and if the page does get created, it means not having to go back into all the pages and put the links back in. Just wondering what you guys think.

That's about all I can think of right now, but I'm sure something else will spring to mind later

Privacy Policy

Sounds like a good idea, the site is meant to be about school events, and we have had instances in the past about teachers' private lives being posted (which we removed). I think a good policy is basically if it didn't happen in school or on a school trip, it doesn't go on the website? Chris talk - mod 16:06, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Privacy

OK, I didn't make that clear (d'oh). I meant we shouldn't post things about teachers' previous schools, where they came from, why they left etc etc. Better to play it safe, especially as we had some issues with a certain teacher's life before they moved to BRGS. There's no need to change it about all of the students..

Chris talk - mod 23:13, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Privacy Policy - each generic offence (like where someone was born, where they used to live etc) probably counts as one case of vandalism, so three equals one day ban. If someone starts posting allegations about someone's private life then it's a personal attack so one offence = one ban. Chris talk - mod 19:04, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

P.S. Also, I think things like their musical taste and which football club they support should be left on, as I can't see any major harm in it being there, especially as most teachers (used to be) reasonably open about all that.

Woah, changes much? Anyway, in regards to the privacy policy, posting people's previous schools? Does that include primary schools? Because that would involve a lot of changes to a lot of pages (including my own) and I really don't see how it could be an issue in regards to privacy.

Eve 21:10, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, I saw all that. It makes sense for the security to be tight on teachers, but with students surely the rules should be slightly different

Eve 21:14, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Oh, and deleting the secret page on JHM? It's still a page with content on, just not one of the 'normal' pages

Eve 21:16, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Well... *shrug* It was a page with a lof of imput put in. Ah well. Your choice. And are we gunna go through all the pages and delete primary schools then?

Eve 21:27, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Ok, this is gunna take a while...

Eve 21:30, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, if others are willing to help. What exactly needs to be taken out of pages? Primary schools... what else?

Eve 21:33, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

So what would you take out of this page: http://www.brgswiki.org/wiki/Christopher_Haworth ?

Eve 21:38, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Also, I've started the Templates page, as a database of sorts for each template. I think keeping the number used to a minimum would be helpful. If you make any more can you add them to this page so that all Admins know when to use each one. Chris talk - mod 14:56, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your info on becoming an Admin and I have added you on facebook. Please could you give me advice on what more I should do to become an admin. Also please could you not block the IP adress 217.***.***.*** as this is one of the BRGS network IP's and no one can edit the wiki at school when you enable autoblock on people who broke the guidelines at school. Many Thanks, Taylornator

Taylornator 20:34, 29 September 2010 (BST)

School IP addresses are supposed to be blocked anyway, and in the spirit of sharing our reciprocal love with school, their filters are supposed to block brgswiki.org. This is because of the volume of low-quality real-time MySpace-style edits, contrary to our yearbook style, like:
 OMG Lucy fancies Jake
 OMG Lucy fancies Jake
OMGZ0RZ Lucy Rlly does fancy Jake
OMGZ0RZ Lucy Rlly does fancy Jake
 U is lame!
 ... [etc]
 17:47 . . Clizard (Talk | contribs | block) deleted "Some body" (content was nothing important/not in-style)
Not that there aren't useful edits from school as well, but these are greatly outnumbered. The bad edits can be a particular pain to clean up. I'd also rather we not compete with lesson time :) I think there's a note about this on my talk page. Clizard 23:07, 29 September 2010 (BST)

Unfortunately Clizard, it is possible to access and edit the wiki from school, and i presume thats where that excessive web traffic was coming from back in June (that way whoever doing it cannot run out of monthly allowance!), although I don't edit at school, I think all those vandals from the other day most likely did it in one computer lesson. Any other help? Let me know! Thanks BRGSMan talk - contribs 18:10, 30 September 2010 (BST)

School

Hi,

Just as a heads up, I've altered most of the contact details so that any problems that are uncovered by teaching staff should be addressed to either myself or David. It's not fair on you to be in the firing line. Keep up the brilliant job with the edits, but please refer any problems that arise in school onto us. In fact, tell the school staff to contact us directly if they have any further problems, I imagine they'll be less inclined to argue with someone they have less influence over. It's completely unfair of them to hassle you over it, and I am considering contacting them directly to complain.

Chris

To All Moderators

This is just a general note to all of the moderators - could you please make sure you check your spelling and grammar when editing? It does look unprofessional when the admins can't spell correctly. Most new browsers should have spellcheckers built in.

Thanks,

Hi Dangerousx, I'm not sure when the decision will be made. It is quite difficult to decide because there are 3 bureaucrats with different views, I think we are all unsure purely because I'm on a lot, and we think we might not need any more admins because I can clear up whats wrong. Changing Page Names

Hi BRGSMan,

I constantly find myself with a need to change page names. I can not see any way to change the names of sub articles, for example the sub-section in 08G, About the groups pupils have ,made in musical futures. This was originally given, what I feel, was a bad name. I changed it and now it seems to be working but it seemed a complicated route. Is their a simpler way to change a name of a page that will carry over the changes to any other attached page?

Cheers PurpleGuy

Hi Purple Guy, yes there is a simple way to change page names, it is using the move button. Unfortunately, this ability is only available for admins, so you can either go the long way around by creating a new page, cutting and pasting the content and putting a redirect on the old page, or you can simply ask me or another of the moderators. I hope I answered your question! Any other help? Let me know! Thanks BRGSMan talk - contribs 17:13, 26 October 2010 (BST)

As an update: we intend to trial a new experimental bug tracking extension with a view to enabling anonymous "bug" reports that will make it easier to have the wiki corrected. It will also be of benefit for general improvements and tracking forward progress. This will be implemented shortly and introduced fully if it proves to be satisfactory system. We will also be implementing an EULA-style display of the statement that a user views before editing.

Don't worry about it. I think the school is over-reacting really, but let's just play it safe in future. Cheers for all your help up to now, keep it up :).Chris talk - mod 19:25, 14 November 2010 (GMT)

(this is addressed to all moderators)

I have been informed of another side of events, and there are suggestions that some moderators have been abusing their power and making unacceptable edits. I will dig further, and if I find that this is the case, I will be permanently blocking accounts of any offenders. However, I am also prepared to offer an amnesty - if you are willing to own up to any breach of the rules, now is the time to do so. We have to take matters like this seriously, as it undermines the authority of the administrators, and puts us in an extremely difficult position.

On the other hand, if you are innocent, and the allegations are not substantiated, we can continue as before.

Chris

As an update, an example has been given as the page of Rebecca Finley. I've deleted it, but I'm sure you can see why it was an issue - the comments are potentially offensive. It does breach the guidelines as set out on the Vandalism page - i.e. that comments cannot be potentially offensive. Please make sure you're aware of this in future.
