Blocks/bans
+
Old or resolved discussions go in the Archive.

These should only really be used in serious circumstances, such as vandalism. In HowToEdit it clearly states that "Anyone posting derogatory, offensive or blatantly insulting comments will be banned for one day", which I think is clear enough. For 'serial offenders' three days may be better. Also, reasons should be given for blocking someone.
+
A few changes and discussion
 +
Hi everyone. Hopefully people who are sysops & still interested will see this. I've just updated the wiki software, along with the theme & email and could do with a high-ish res, non-copyright picture of something featuring brgs for the left navigation (can't access my library of images at the moment), just upload or send to email.

Blocking someone for making blank pages does seem slightly harsh, so a warning is often better in my opinion. Furthermore there is a warning on the main page so there's no excuse I guess!
+
It'd be useful to have a discussion and get feedback on the following ideas:
 +
* Updating the editorial guidelines, separating out the musts from the shoulds. Any other updates?
 +
* {Youboy} and {Youboycustom|your text here} templates now available (use two curly braces to make them work).
 +
* 'Year Upping' (current system spec.: year upping) feedback (?).
 +
* Maybe Gold/Silver pages - just a quick idea - both types of page where formatting, presentation and spelling should be stricter. Silver = working towards that goal. Gold = reached that goal. These could form a pool of articles to be featured on the main page.
 +
* Anyone know the current status of the school lancs filter for: www.brgswiki.org, brgswiki.org and stats.brgswiki.org? (previous discussion in 2007)

Also, changes that I've done or are planning to do over the next couple of weeks are:
 +
* More style and formatting work, particularly on the main page. (Done)
 +
* Updating the help section and making the section easier to navigate. (Done)
 +
* Update to links below the edit box, reflecting the changes to the help system.
 +
* Implementing year upping fully, if the system is useful and makes sense, by September.
 +
* Installing mods that we had in the past. (e.g. userscore, permissions etc.) (Done - user permissions is no longer up-to-date enough to be included)
 +
* Creating and upgrading the logic behind Google Sitemaps - getting page priorities and refresh rates right for search crawlers.
 +
* Re-enabling basic HTML tags in edits, if possible (enabling useful HTML tags that allow you to do things like noinclude).

I agree. Blocking people for making one bad edit (which they may not even know is wrong) is just going to force people away. I've tried to ask people to stop (see here); and they usually do. Obviously this is harder with an IP; but then just put it as a note on the Main Page.
+
Contact
You can easily see how many times someone's been blocked too; so just use your judgement.
+
Brand new email address for contacts: email. Hopefully we can now stop checking the Hotmail address which was being bombarded with spam and MySpace rubbish :). It'll be checked for a couple of weeks still but will eventually be left to pass away!

Also, I've made this page as a draft for users to request moderators to do anything - what do you think before it's copied over?
+
All relevant emails will be passed on to all the moderators who are currently active.

New Sections
 +
We really need some new sections creating to help the wiki expand. Perhaps we should make suggestions here and then announce them publicly?

It's a good idea but personally I don't imagine it'll get much use - I've never been asked to reinstate a page so I doubt anyone would pay it much attention. But you could certainly stick it on the main page and prove me wrong! Chris 17:16, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

On a side note, myself and Clizard have had to endure a Speech Night filled with staff asking us about then wiki...... so at least it's notorious!

I had a think of this while I was at parent's evening tonight. How about if we say (using 'vandalism' as an umbrella term for everything we don't want):
+
The School IP
* For minor vandalism (i.e. <s>moving pages</s>, blanking pages, <s>creating blank pages</s> etc. [repeatedly]) from a user, we firstly ask them to stop, then secondly warn them they'll be banned if they continue then ban them for 1 day/3 days<s>/1 week/and so on...</s>
+
Due to further vandalism today, such as the blanking-out of Heskey's page, the school IP address has been blocked indefinitely.

* For minor vandalism from IP addresses, we rollback the first one then if they do it again (easy to check what contributions they've made) block them <s>in escalating bans, this time starting from 3 days.</s>
+
Do not unblock the school address at this time, as the majority of all vandalism happens on this IP, we assume by people who (mistakenly) believe that they can hide behind it. Furthermore, it also means that fewer edits (in theory) will happen during the day, hopefully then cutting down on unchecked vandalism due to all the mods being at school/uni/work/in bed..

* For major vandalism (i.e. pages that insult people, changing redirects to different pages, attacking "important" pages like the main page etc. [repeatedly]) from a user, we do a one-day ban immediately and leave a message on their talk page for when they're unbanned. <s>Then the bans just escalate normally.</s>
+
Thanks

* For major vandalism from an IP address, it's a straight 3 day ban <s>and then from there to one month if they do it again.</s>
+
Chris mod 15:02, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

What I was thinking was: if you're changing redirects or creating insulting pages, you obviously want to disrupt the wiki; whereas blanking pages or moving them could just be a mistake by someone not familiar with the software. And let's be honest, it doesn't take more than about five seconds to rollback a page or move it back; so there's no big work invovled.
+
Contact information
Obviously there's grey areas here; but it's not hard to use your judgement.
+
I think posting someone's contact information beyond their email address (so stuff like their home address, telephone/mobile number etc.) should be a bannable offence. ==How to make your signature even more awesome...and I have too much spare time...==

* I don't think there's anything wrong with making blank pages (not against guidlines). Edits are crossings out and in square brackets to how I think it should read. I will fix it so that moving pages can only be done by sysops also, so this can't be an offense. In terms of major and minor vandalism, I'd say that any minor vandalism doens't need any ban unless it's going to waste mod's time in a very serious way. I think this also needs to be changed to repeated vandalism in order to invoke a ban of up to 3 days (because one edit can easily be changed and may be a joke; doesn't waste much time). Any greater bans become ineffective, as IPs change; users get annoyed etc. On top of this, by laying down the law, users are discouraged from visiting the site and making changes. I had used bans a bit too liberally over the past few weeks, and I think it should be under more extreme cases.
+
#I'm afraid this no longer works since html is disabled and prevents editing of pages where it already exists (and there's not a lot I can do about it). Clizard 15:00, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

I will also look into putting text directly onto the header when editing a page, relating to guidelines etc. instead of on the front page.
+
This makes it a dynamic template - whenever you change your signature on User:Your_name/sig, it's  updated all over the wiki. It might be an idea to protect these, as anyone who changes the page will then have the changes shown all over the wiki; which will make it easy to do a DoS attack.

*Agreed - I've handed out my fair share of bans too. It does seem to have worked though, as the majority of edits nowadays are positive, at least in my experience. Perhaps we can lay off the bans slightly now for minor idiocy, a warning is often enough. The guidelines above seem fine to me, should redraft again perhaps before it's posted. Yep, it took me ages to work it out. The advantage is that if in the future we get a page we want to link to (for example, if BRGS_Wiki:Administrators is done properly), it'll be linked to in the past as well, so people will easily be able to see it. Plus I like the novelty factor :P 17:28, 13 December 2006 (UTC) (and it's easy to see which pages you've signed on).

We (the moderators) have unfortunately had to ban some users for negative contributions towards the wiki. With this in mind, we have thought up some guidelines for when we will be using bans. Please remember that these will be used as a last resort - don't be afraid to edit and make a mistake - you won't be banned!

Wow, I seem to be posting a lot on here lately...Anyway, I was thinking, should we allow forms to have a section on their form pages to say what they think about themselves. In effect, an area exempt from the general feeling on keeping it NPOV, but still within the guidelines of insults and grammar etc. It won't harm anything, and as long as we check them, it should be ok. 23:41, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Since traffic has slowed down recently, i think it should be considered, to get traffic going again, or to just give us more work, as there is very little these days. Kronos mod  19:34, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Also, we need to think of somewhere to put it. I imagine only new visitors bother to look at HowToEdit, so we either need a new page or someway of showing people that the page has been updated without messing up the formatting on the main page. Jonny talk • mod 12:52, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
+
I don't think the BRGS Wiki has to be absolutely NPOV anyway, just not offensive - positive pages are always appreciated. On the other end of the scale, with negative pages, the offensiveness, insults and bad grammar generally go hand in hand. In terms of traffic December looks set to be an overall increase in traffic over November, and is at least on the same level of traffic. Blocking some of the school range to edits has helped reduce minor edits, even though not all edits from school were vandalism. Overall edit levels have perhaps decreased. I think other new sections should be focussed on rather than writing about students, which is generally difficult to moderate (which is one reason why we have some year reps - to try and check facts).

Moderator Page

I thought that perhaps the moderators should have somewhere to discuss certain guidelines, particularly with respect to blocks/bans etc. In my opinion this is better than all of us having different views on what to do!

Any thoughts? Add them below if you want. I've made it so that only sysops can edit this page - it may also be an idea to add it to your watchlist so you can easily see what's going on.

Old or resolved discussions go in the Archive.

A few changes and discussion

Hi everyone. Hopefully people who are sysops & still interested will see this. I've just updated the wiki software, along with the theme & email and could do with a high-ish res, non-copyright picture of something featuring brgs for the left navigation (can't access my library of images at the moment), just upload or send to
Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination
.

It'd be useful to have a discussion and get feedback on the following ideas:

 • Updating the editorial guidelines, separating out the musts from the shoulds. Any other updates?
 • {Youboy} and {Youboycustom|your text here} templates now available (use two curly braces to make them work).
 • 'Year Upping' (current system spec.: year upping) feedback (?).
 • Maybe Gold/Silver pages - just a quick idea - both types of page where formatting, presentation and spelling should be stricter. Silver = working towards that goal. Gold = reached that goal. These could form a pool of articles to be featured on the main page.
 • Anyone know the current status of the school lancs filter for: www.brgswiki.org, brgswiki.org and stats.brgswiki.org? (previous discussion in 2007)

Also, changes that I've done or are planning to do over the next couple of weeks are:

 • More style and formatting work, particularly on the main page. (Done)
 • Updating the help section and making the section easier to navigate. (Done)
 • Update to links below the edit box, reflecting the changes to the help system.
 • Implementing year upping fully, if the system is useful and makes sense, by September.
 • Installing mods that we had in the past. (e.g. userscore, permissions etc.) (Done - user permissions is no longer up-to-date enough to be included)
 • Creating and upgrading the logic behind Google Sitemaps - getting page priorities and refresh rates right for search crawlers.
 • Re-enabling basic HTML tags in edits, if possible (enabling useful HTML tags that allow you to do things like noinclude).

The School IP

Due to further vandalism today, such as the blanking-out of Heskey's page, the school IP address has been blocked indefinitely.
