As I see it, this was a poor attempt for peace, the two state solution is a massive step forward, but the other demands are a massive step backward. Wanting Palestinian’s to except Israel as a state will never happen, it’s like giving beef to a vegetarian, a pig to a Muslim and meat that isn’t Kosher to a Jew, it just won’t happen. Also he said nothing about stopping settlements, so if there is a state of Palestine, the Israeli’s may boot them off and we’ll be back at square one. Then there are the points of a demilitarized zone and no control over there airspace, this is stupid. I’ve talked about Israel’s armed forces so why aren’t Palestine allowed to have them, Israel may say it’s for “national security” but Palestine may say “there national security is in jeopardy as they have nothing and Israel have all that might”. Peace is a word that has been used to often, when there isn’t, but in this area, there never will be any in the near future. People have tried and failed to find peace and this effort is another example of this. He fell through the crack in the beds in belgium "woah whats the crack here, im in a crack!!" Also whilr in Belgium he had to read the poem entitled "Percy Horesfeild of Booth" whilst in Tyne Cot cemetry, he did this, but in his classic Lancashire accent and mucked it all up. Also whilst in Belgium at night, whilst on his PSP, he turned looked at Will and went like this, "Reight stop looking at me, were not a married couple". Weird Mind

No one knows what goes on in his head, most of the time he complains about everything, apart from that he's a mystery. It is said that during primary school he had an obscecion with Hitler and the third reich, also during the Egypt trip he managed to bore everyone taking about how close Germany was to winning WW2, also during that trip he talked about the munnitions in the Yom Kippur war, which was between, well I'm not sure. The next thind is his weird habits, i.e., walks in to form room, walks out goes to the toilet comes back and then stands up walks around and then works of saying something weird to himself. Then theres his uniform, it's always tucked in and perfect, were playing football it's boiling hot and he's tucked in, has his topp button done and is wearing his blazer.

Israel and Palestine Article

On the 14 June 2009, the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu, held a speech in the Begin-Sadat centre.

The speech was prompted by American President Barack Obama while on his tour of the Middle East said that Israel had to stop building settlements on

Palestinian land and he asked for a two state solution to this feud which has been going on for over forty years.

To understand Netanyahu we firstly need to understand the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Firstly, in the time period 1880-1916, this was the time when Jews started to come and live in Palestine. The reason they came was because of the Zionist ideology, this was the idea that one day there would be a homeland for the Jewish. They got the land in Palestine by buying it off the Ottoman (Turkish) empire which was coming to an end, also they bought some land of some Arabs called Effendi’s (lords and masters).

The next time period was 1917 to 1919. In 1917 Palestine was under the British Mandate, which meant Britain ruled Palestine, and both the Arabs and Israelis were happy with this, but the Balfour declaration ended this peace as it said that Britain wanted to create a home land for the Jews in Palestine. This incensed the Arab Palestinians and then in 1914 the Faisal–Weizmann Agreement also said that there should be a Jewish homeland in Palestine, this was when the tension began.

1920 to 1939. In 1920 at the San Remo conference let Britain have present day Jordan and Iraq and gave France present day Syria and Lebanon. In 1922 Britain gave all land west of the Jordan river to Jordan, and the land that was left was in the British Mandate, Britain had said that they would give land to the Arabs and Israeli’s in private, but then Britain came out and said that they had not promised the Arabs and Israeli’s any land, because of this the Palestine Riot of 1920 and the Jaffa riots of 1921 took place .When Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany this made the Jews more urgent to get a homeland, this angered the Arabs so much they started to attack the Jewish population most notably in the 1929 Hebron Riots were 67 Jews were killed on the 23rd and 24th of August, also there was the 1936-1939 Arab revolt which wanted less Jewish immigration. The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem wanted to expel Britain from Palestine so know one would back the Jews so he joined the Axis Powers, which consisted of Germany and Japan. Because of this Britain got rid of the Grand Mufti, he later went on to create a Muslim SS squadron in the Balkans. To respond to the Arabs Revolt the Jews formed Irgun which was a militant group that killed about 270 Muslim Arabs.

In 1937 the Peel commission came up with a two state solution for the problem in Palestine. It said that the Arabs get the control of Negev which is were Gaza and the West bank is today, and the Jews would have control of Tel Aviv, Haifa, present day northern Israel and surrounding areas, the British would still control Jaffa, Jerusalem and Bethlehem. The Jews fought with each other but in the end they decided to accept this solution, the Arabs on the other hand didn’t. The Arabs wanted to stop Jews immigrating into Palestine and stop land sales to Jews and they wanted Palestine to be an independent Arab country. During the 1940’s Irgun assassinated some British Mandate officials and also blew up the King David Hotel in 1946.

War of 1948, this war was caused as the Jews were promised land after World War 2 in Palestine, the Arabs protested and war broke out. The 1948 war is as the Israeli War of Independence to Jews, or The Disaster by Arabs. It was started after the United Nations partition plan of 1947, (Giving the Israeli’s part of Palestine); Israeli’s agreed to it, the Arabs didn’t so it all kicked off from that. There was no proper army for each side, just militant groups like Irgun, which was Israeli, where fighting. When Britain went, there was a declaration of the state of Israel, almost immediately after that, Jordanian, Egyptian, Syrian, Lebanese, Iraqi and Saudi Arabian troops invaded Palestine. These Arabs states said they were going in to make a United State of Palestine, the U.S and the United Nations called this illegal aggression and wanted a peace treaty signed immediately.

During the fighting two thirds of the Arab Palestinian population fled, this is about 770,000 people who became refugees because of the war. The war came to an end there was the signing of the Armistice Agreements which recognized Israel as a state and gave Arabs just above half of the land, the Gaza Strip was occupied by Egypt and the West Bank by Jordan. At the end of the war many Arabs were in refugee camps and weren’t allowed out into Israel at all, many of them fled to other countries and in the end with a lot of pressure on them Israel let them come in.

Six Day War. The Six Day War off 1967 started when the Soviet Union told president Nasser of Egypt that Israeli troops were pilling up near the Syria-Israeli border also just before this incident there had been skirmishes between Jordan and Israel and Syria and Israel. The war its self started when Israel attacked Egypt and Syria which was out of the Blue and not expected. Egypt then blocked the Straits of Tiran which meant Israeli shipping couldn’t go anywhere, this lasted two days. During this time Egypt had got an army of 100,000 men ready to go and fight Israel, Israel (not including there reserves) had 240,000 men ready to go to war. Israel made surprise air attacks on Egypt's air force while it was on the ground and destroyed it. After that Israel invaded the Sinai Peninsular and the Gaza Strip then took it over, they then took over Sinai. After that Jordan and Syria started to shell Israel, despite this Israel captured the West Bank on June 7th and Golan Heights on June 9th, this ended the war.

Resolution 242. After the six day war the U.N and the United Nations Security Council came up with resolution 242, which was meant to bring peace in the Arab Israeli conflict. It wanted "the establishment of a just and lasting peace in the Middle East which should include the application of both the following principles: (i) Withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict", "(ii) Termination of all claims or states of belligerency“, when the vote came to see if it should be used it got 15 out of 15 yes votes. It is still controversial over the amount of land Israel had to give back, in the end it was a failure and didn’t do anything to try and stop it.

Yom Kippur War. The Yom Kippur War happened on the Jewish day of fasting 1973 when Egypt and Syria attacked the Sinai Peninsular and the Golan Heights, the Egyptians and Syrians pushed on for two days, and then the momentum went in Israel's favour. By the second week the Syrians were just pushed out off Golan Heights, in Sinai the Israeli's had stopped a whole army. During this time the Americans gave the Israelis military equipment and the Russians gave the Egyptians supplies. In the end Israel won but there was a low morale because a lot of people had died, in the end it ended up by both sides signing a peace treaty.

So that’s the history, but also very recently there has been fighting between Hamas, the political rulers of Gaza and Israel. This war started when Hamas fired rockets into Israel and Israel fired rockets into Gaza. Also another point for this war was that weapons for Gaza were being secretly stored and new ones brought in tunnels from Egypt, this coupled with the rocket attacks gave Israel the chance to invade, stating “it was a matter of national security that we retaliated”. Hamas and people who lived in Gaza put up a fight, but there was no hope, Israel has an extremely big and well trained army, with some of the best kit available thanks to its own arms industry and it’s ties with America. Israel also has one of the best mechanized divisions in the whole, due to some excellent tanks like the Mervaka and the Sabra, also the Israeli’s ingenuity means that the tanks have the best armour, gun and hostile detection system in the world. Then there’s Israel’s air force, which I personally believe is the third best in the world just behind the United States of America and Russia. Its air force is the biggest in the Middle East; it’s the most up to date, has the best weapons systems and is always the first country allowed to buy an American fighter, i.e. the F-15 Strike Eagle. They also have the best pilots in the world, the worlds best jet ace is Israeli and on there second test flight of there newly acquired F-15, a pilot landed it, without its left wing, this is considered one of the best pieces of piloting in the world. In the U.S.A they have the S.E.A.L.S in Britain we’ve got the SAS, Russia have the Spetnaz and Israel have Mosad. You’ve probably never heard of them, but they are the best fighting force in the world, better than the S.E.A.L.S, SAS and the Spetnaz. If something is going wrong for Israel, they sort it, when a newspaper received a leak that Israel had Nuclear weapons, Mosad tracked down who leaked the information, and brought them to justice, also there extremely good at finding ex Nazi’s who are in hiding. With all this force, Hamas didn’t have any chance what so ever and in the end they were defeated. But Israel in that war committed a lot of crimes. They fought in a populated city which is banned, they used cluster bombs which are banned and they even fired upon buildings full of civilians, all this happened in January this year.

To sum up what Netanyahu said, he said he wants peace and the children of the future to live in a nice environment and he wants Palestinians to have there own state. But he also wants Palestine to recognise the state of Israel, he wants full control of Palestine’s airspace, he wants Palestine fully demilitarised and he didn’t say that Israel would stop building settlements on Palestinian land.

Automatically I thought of the Versailles treaty which limited Germany’s armed forces and demilitarised the Rhineland after World War One. When Hitler was on his tour of Germany he used Versailles as a point to get more votes, he said he would scrap this idea and make Germany strong, the Versailles treaty was one of the Reasons for World War Two and there is a chance that if Netanyahu’s plan is put into action the same could happen and a war would start. President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt said that Netanyahu had “ruined” any chances for peace when he said Palestine put except the State of Israel. As soon as Hamas heard it they said it was a load of rubbish. But President Obama was pleased with want Netanyahu said and hopes that a two state solution is possible, so there’s a lot of mixed views.

If there is going to be peace there is only two ways of achieving it, giving Israel back to the Palestine’s or buy getting rid of the Palestinians, both of these will never happen, so if there is to be peace, it won’t be in your life.

Manchester Airport expansion Article

Boston, Washington, Miami, Dallas-Fort worth, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Cairo, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Seoul, Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, Moscow, Kiyev, Warsaw, Minsk, Riga, Madrid, Rome, Berlin, Dublin, Beirut, Damascus, San’a, Muscat and Bahrain. These are some of the most diverse cities in the world, they are full of history, culture, fun and some sun, but we can’t get to them. If you live in the North West of England you will know that Manchester Ring way international airport (abbreviations are MAN or EGCC) is the biggest airport that we can fly from, it is the second biggest airport in Britain outside from London. And it is an international airport, flying to New York, Dubai and Singapore but the biggest operator out of Manchester is Thomson fly, a cheap holiday airline. And any of you that thought British Airways were the biggest airline to operate out of Manchester, your wrong they have the grand total of one flight going to Heathrow. But as older viewers may remember BA used to have a big influence at Manchester, they even had there own terminal (which is now terminal 3) but in the 80’s, with prices going up to park at Manchester, even though it was still pretty cheap, they wound down, until they were left with two flights one going to New York John F Kennedy airport and the other one going to Heathrow, but BA lost the JFK route to Delta airlines so they were only left with one.

In 2003 the government launched the, Future of Air Transport white paper that marked out the proposals to expand different airports around the country, including Manchester and Heathrow. As I’m sure you’re aware this paper stated that Heathrow should get a third runway and this has been in the news, but do you know what the proposals for Manchester were. Firstly, more taxiway to connect the two runways in more places, and more taxiway to connect different parts of the airport to ease congestion, for this to happen they have to knock down some of the old buildings, which they’ve already started to do. Secondly they are to expand terminal 3 so it can serve more European, domestic and a couple of international routes, this will make 14 new gates available. Thirdly they are to increase seating in terminal one, by redesigning the gate system so arrivals and departures have a separate floor each. Finally they are going to extend terminal two by adding a satellite building that will allow 15 more gates. All this expansion is good, but does it still need a third runway.

Firstly, the pro’s of a third runway. Jobs, to build a runway it takes a lot of men and machines, and in this time of economic uncertainty for the construction building it would be an excellent venture to create new jobs, and to help some companies stay up. Also when the runway is built people will have to look after it, repair it, this would create new jobs. The next point has something to do with the Soviet Union. When the Soviet Union collapsed lots off small independent countries were created such as Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan also countries near India like Bangladesh. These countries soon set up there own national airlines, but as they were so poor they could only afford old aircraft such as Airbus A300’s and A310’s. The problem with these aircraft is that they have limited range and limited fuel, meaning they can’t get to America, meaning they have to stop somewhere, Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle airport, Frankfurt main and Amsterdam Schiphol airport are the obvious choices to stop over, but the landing fee’s at these airports are very high, so why not land at Manchester, if this was too happen it would bring in a lot more tourists, and if bigger airlines see that it’s working well as a spring board they could start using it as a spring board. And this isn’t fantasy; Biman Bangladesh airlines use Manchester as a spring board to New York. If all of this was too happen it would help the tourism market and the economy of Manchester and the surrounding area. So to sum up the pro’s, more jobs, improved tourism and a stronger local economy.

Now for the cons. The first major problem is where to put it. Manchester airport is in a pretty bad position as the Pendle hills and Lake District make it difficult for a plane to land as there’s a high possibility of overshooting the runway. So probably the runway would be placed were houses woods and natural habitats would be, meaning they would have to be taken down. But when the 2nd runway was built the airport spent £20 million on building new habitats for animals to live, they also relocated people who lost there homes, and they had to reconstruct to grade two listed buildings. But still after all of this, environmentalists complained about the lost woods and natural habitats. The next point is noise pollution. As aircraft get bigger the engines get bigger creating more noise and as Manchester wants to be a major international airport they will be handling with the biggest aircraft of them all, the Airbus A380. Undoubtedly this would create a lot of noise, too much for the local residents to stand and animals would move a way. This would mean house prices around the third runway would plummet damaging the housing economy and the local animal levels. The final point is light pollution; to fully light up a runway you need lots and lots of light bulbs. At night these lights would be on all the time and would be very garish to people living near them and may stop them from going to sleep which would damage there health severely. So to sum up the cons, there would be bad effects on local wildlife, there would be an increase in noise and an increase in light.

Should Manchester get a third runway? At this moment in time I believe the answer is no. The expansion that is happening at the moment is sufficient for now, it will let larger aircraft land and expand routes and that is all that is needed at the moment. In the future though, somewhere around 2015, I believe Manchester will need a third runway, with new bigger aircraft such as the Boeing 747-8 and the Airbus A350XWB and more airlines operating the A380 it will need a third runway to keep up with other airports. So at the moment its fine but in the future it will need one.

Britains Nuclear detterent Article

As I’m sure you’re aware, Iran wants nuclear missiles and North Korea are test firing a lot which is scaring quite a lot of countries, but with all this talk about other countries and nuclear weapons, have you ever wondered about Britain’s nuclear capability.

But before we go anywhere we first should understand how the nuclear bomb works. There are two types of nuclear bomb, the atomic bomb and the hydrogen bomb, there are two main differences, the atomic bomb is less complicated than the hydrogen bomb but the hydrogen bomb is much more destructive. Firstly the atomic bomb, the atomic bomb works on a process called nuclear fission, it works like this. Uranium or Plutonium is used in an atomic bomb as they are unstable, radioactive. This means that there atoms fall apart or decay, releasing the nuclei and a bit of energy when this process happens, this radiation can damage plant and human cells so it’s very dangerous. An atomic bomb is arraigned in a metal casing, were there’s a core of either Uranium or Plutonium and the core is coated with a layer of Trinitrotoluene (TNT). When the TNT goes of the Plutonium or Uranium shrinks, this means the escaping nuclei from the decay can’t get out with out touching one another, when these nuclei hit another atom, they force its nuclei to break down, this causes a chain reaction until the energy gets too much and the bomb explodes spreading the area with radioactive material. This was the same type of bomb which was dropped on Hiroshima in Japan, ending America’s war with Japan and World War Two.

Now for the next type of nuclear bomb, the hydrogen bomb. The hydrogen bomb is arraigned in this format, firstly an outer layer made of Uranium then there the core which is full of deuterium and tritium, isotopes of hydrogen and attached to the core is a number of small atomic bombs. The bomb works on the principal of nuclear fusion, which works like this. The core of deuterium and tritium is squeezed when the small atomic bombs are detonated; the force is so great from the compression the nuclei from the two substances combine, this creates a new nucleus, Helium. The Helium nucleus uses less energy before it was fussed and gets rid of one neutron as it isn’t needed; this seeps out as radioactive waste. The escaping neutrons also make the Uranium casing go through nuclear fission creating an atomic bomb explosion, which in case lets all the radioactive material from the core to leak out over the area causing lasting damage.

So that’s how the bomb works, but who’s got them and how did they come to exist. There are ten countries, including Britain, that have nuclear weapons, they are the United States of America, Russia, United Kingdom, France, China, Israel, Pakistan, North Korea and South Africa and the final country, is it Germany, is it Japan, no your, wrong it’s India, obviously. Now for how the bomb came to place. It was mainly down to a progression of physics. In 1898 Frenchman Piere Cuire and his wife discovered that an ore of Uranium gave of radioactivity they named this process Radium. In 1911 Ernest Rutherford discovered that an atoms mass is made up of a nucleus, protons and electrons whizzing around outside the nucleus and protons. In 1932 James Chadwick discovered the nucleus and in the same year John Cockcroft and Ernest Walton split an atom for the first time. In 1934, Leó Szilárd came up with the idea of the chain reaction to create the atomic bomb, he got the idea patented. But in secret the patent was given to the Royal Navy so they could have a look at how the bomb worked. And then on the 13th January 1939 Lise Meitner and her nephew Otto Robert Frisch announced that when Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann bombarded uranium with neutrons nuclear fission had taken place all the building were there, now it just needed a builder. As you’ve probably picked up all of this fell into place during World War 2. Both the Allies and the Nazi’s tried to build one. In the end the allies won the race with the Manhattan project, and these bombs were dropped on Hiroshima. But it could’ve been all different; Nazi Germany had a Nuclear Bomb ready two weeks before the end of the war, how very different the world would be if they had used it.

Now about Britain. Britain nuclear weapons consisted of bombs that could be dropped out of aircraft like the Avro Vulcan bomber until 1998. When Britain decided to use nuclear submarine based weapons, it was called Trident. But before trident Britain had another land and sea based nuclear bomb, it was Polaris which was bought of America on the 21st December 1962 with a cost to the taxpayer of £10 billion. Back to Trident. The Trident missiles can only be launched of one type of submarine, the vanguard class, and we have the grand number of 4. One is permanently out at sea just in case, two are at there base HMNB Clyde in Scotland and one is used on training. And these submarines have about 160 missiles to play with, I know this sounds poor but we do have a bout 200, but the other 40 are broken, oh and ps America have about 15,000 missiles. But were doing better than North Korea, as they only have 10, and they’ve used 5 in test firing.

So there you go, a very brief description of Britain’s nuclear deterrent, I hope you’ve found it interesting, but I really hope that we will never have to use it.
