[[Jack Starkie]] and [[Andrew Shaw]] convinced him that they'd signed him up for a debating exam that day (there's no such exam!). He needed to rehearse some music so Jack, Andrew and a bunch of others went to the computer room and printed off a little note saying that he would have to pay 9 quid because he missed the exam. Tom got worked up and went to see [[Miss Robinson]] because the note told him to. She was in the general office and when Tom said that he didn't sign himself up, she obviously had no idea what he was on about.
