Bacup Views

  • Some believe Bacup to be the scum-central of Rossendale "which deserves to be napalmed (except napalm is a little bit extreme and nasty)".
  • Interestingly, reports have returned that it is a hostile environment where one may be attacked for looking different to others, but how these comments returned from the "missing people" is yet to be shown conclusively.
  • In Bacup it is not uncommon for people to reply to every question with "Your Mum." The skill is to read between the lines.
  • We asked people who lived there to describe the town in one word, the most common responses were 'a shit hole' and 'your mum'.

It may be that Bacup is going through its misunderstood-teenage years, after a significant rebirth, and with the Rossendale Council moving some of its offices into the centuries old town. The Council has not been one of The Valley's single redeeming features since it was damned in a 2004 Audit Commission report as the worst local authority in the country, but hopefully it and Bacup can help each other through this difficult time. It is currently undergoing vast investment, and just like a teenager has some very nice points, even if acne does cause some worry and make it look less pretty outwardly than it feels on the inside.

There are some. however, who believe that Bacup is the best place not only in Rossendale, but in the whole world. You may not appreciate just how wonderful it is when you live there, but when you're far far away, it seems very inviting. Some people of taste and intellect even manage to appreciate it when they are living there, and have been doing so for a number of years. The friendliness of the people (even the total scallies - drugs make you happy, right?), the variety of arcitecture and the proximity of lovely things like hills that look pretty in the snow, and the smallest street in the world are just a small selection of all the things that make Bacup the lovely place that it is.
