The 5 second rule is widespread throughout Rossendale and applies to food that has been on the floor or in the bin.

Conditions

  • The Rule doesn't apply if the food is wrapped in some sort of casing, concealing it from the floor or bin.
  • The Rule applies to all forms of food, but this rule is extended to 10 seconds is the food in question is dry.
  • If you do manage to pick it up in time, look around, if anyone saw you, eat it rapidly...if not, take as long as you need, because you want to amplify the gross factor.
  • In extenuating circumstances, the timing can be extended, normally to a limit of thirty seconds, however it has been known to extend to five minutes when we dropped an entire bag of jelly beans on the floor in a youth hostel
